What is a private prescription?
A private prescription is issued by a doctor for medication where you pay the full cost for each item rather than the subsidised flat fee you pay on the NHS for any prescription. You may consider a private prescription for medication that is unavailable on the NHS or via a private doctor who you may be able to see faster than an NHS doctor.
How to get a private prescription?
Our online doctor service enables you to receive a private prescription if you are looking for medication to treat one of our listed conditions. We offer private prescriptions to treat the following conditions; erectile dysfunction, weight loss, hair loss, situational anxiety, genital herpes or certain skin conditions including acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.
How much is a private prescription?
Prices of private prescriptions will vary depending on the treatment you are receiving and the service you choose. For our online doctor service, consultations are free of charge and our treatments costs vary from £15 to £300 depending on the condition and course of treatment. You can get a quote for your medication here. For private prescriptions you've obtained from another GP, we have a minimum dispensing charge of £9.65 per item. You can contact us in advance to find out how much it would cost for us to dispense your private prescription - click here.
Who delivers my medicines?
Your medicines will be delivered by Royal Mail in plain, discreet packaging. We'll let you know when we despatch your medicines and Royal Mail may send you an email or text message on the day of delivery to let you know when your parcel will arrive.
How long is a private prescription valid for?
Your private prescription is valid for 6 months from the date on your prescription.
What are the legal requirements for a private prescription?
The prescription must have been issued in the UK and the prescriber must be legally qualified to issue a prescription in the issuing country. The prescription must also be signed in indelible ink by the doctor or prescriber who is issuing the prescription. The prescription must include the following details:
The prescriber's details:
- First and last name
- Professional qualification
- Direct contact details
- Work address
- Name of the state in which they work
- Prescriber's signature
The details of the medication being prescribed:
- Common name of the product or brand name where applicable
- Pharmaceutical formulation (such as tablets, capsules etc.)
- Quantity to be supplied
- Strength of the medicine being supplied
- The instructions for use or dosage regime
What is the difference between private prescriptions and NHS prescriptions?
A private prescription is usually written by a doctor for an item or medicine which isn't available to be prescribed on an NHS prescription. It's also sometimes an alternative way for someone to receive prescription for a medicine in other circumstances, for example NHS waiting times for high demand services can also lead people to look at obtaining medical services and prescriptions privately as it may be faster in some cases.
