Ear wax is our body’s way of stopping dust and germs entering our ear canal and causing problems. It’s a natural protection and is formed by glands in our ears. Although ear wax has an important function, sometimes it can form blockages that need a helping hand to be removed.
What is ear irrigation?
Ear irrigation is the removal of soft wax that has built up over time. A machine keeps warm water at a consistent pressure as it gently flushes out excess wax from the ear. Our ear irrigation treatments are carried out by a trained healthcare professional who will talk you through the procedure before they get started.

Why should I have this treatment?
A build-up of excess ear wax can cause unwanted symptoms including:
- Temporary hearing loss
- Feeling sick or dizzy (vertigo)
- Earache
- Ringing sounds in your ears
Ear irrigation can help to ease these symptoms.
How should I prepare for my treatment?
To maximise the effectiveness of your ear irrigation, you should use medical grade olive oil or sodium bicarbonate ear drops from a pharmacist in the days leading up to your treatment. This will help to soften the wax. Our health practitioner will examine your ears and ask you a few questions before starting your ear irrigation. They’ll also let you know what steps to take following your treatment.
Is ear irrigation safe?
Ear irrigation is generally considered a safe treatment for the removal of excess ear wax. It is important though that your treatment is carried out by an experienced healthcare professional in a clinical setting. Ear syringing is a different type of treatment that uses a manual technique. This is considered unsafe and is not recommended.
Please note, you should not have this treatment if you have suffered with a perforated eardrum (within the last 12 months) or grommet, have a foreign object inside the ear canal or have had an outer or middle-ear infection in the last 6 weeks.
Could I experience any side effects after my treatment?
Typically, any side effects experienced are short-lasting and should subside within 24 hours. Side effects might include temporary dizziness, nausea, discomfort, ear infection, continued tinnitus and light bleeding. If you do experience any of these symptoms, we recommend speaking to your GP or pharmacist.
