How to use Betnovate
Please be advised that it’s important to read the enclosed leaflet carefully before starting use of any of the Betnovate preparations.
The cream, ointment, or Scalp Application should be applied to the affected area(s) of skin, once or twice a day. Only a thin layer should be used. After the cream has been absorbed, an emollient (moisturising) cream, such as Diprobase or Cetraben, can be applied to the same area if necessary.
Because Betnovate is a strong preparation, you should start to use it less often as your symptoms start to improve, and continue to use an emollient cream to maintain the benefits in the longer term. Ideally, you shouldn’t use it on a daily basis for longer than four weeks.
If your symptoms are still not responding after this time, talk to your doctor. If you stop using it suddenly, without gradually tailing off, your skin condition may relapse.
The choice of whether to use Betnovate cream or ointment is a personal one; the cream is more acceptable cosmetically. It’s easier to rub in and absorbs better than the greasier ointment, and is easier to spread over a larger area. However, the ointment stays on the skin for longer and may therefore be slightly more effective for smaller areas of skin.
Is Betnovate suitable for me?
There are various situations in which Betnovate preparations should be used with caution or would not be recommended at all. This could be, for example, if you have a skin infection, have reacted to other steroid preparations before, or if the skin to be treated is on the face or around the anal or genital areas. You are also advised to not to use the treatment if you have an allergy to any of the active or inactive ingredients.
During your consultation, please make us aware if you are taking any other medicines, including other creams or eczema treatments you are using. This applies regardless of whether they’re prescribed by your doctor or are purchased from a pharmacy without a prescription.
You should not use Betnovate preparations if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant, or are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, unless you have been specifically advised to do so by your doctor.
If it doesn’t work for you, tell the doctor because a different treatment might be better.

What are the side effects of Betnovate?
Like all medicines, Betnovate can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Side effects that are considered to be common include itching, and a sensation of burning or pain on the affected area. Other side effects are very rare but can include a rash on other parts of the body, skin thinning, hair loss or growth, or skin discolouration. If you experience any side effects that are persistent or troublesome, you should stop using Betnovate and talk to your doctor.
